Belts fail at the fold — the crease behind the buckle where the strap bends with every wearing — and the failure is so universal that most people have concluded belts are simply consumable. They aren't. The universality comes from what most belts are actually made of: bonded leather, which is scraps ground up, glued together and coated to photograph like hide. Bend a glued laminate daily and it delaminates; that familiar crack across the fold is the material confessing what it is.

Hanks builds the counter-argument: full-grain leather, cut thick, made in the USA, with a warranty aimed squarely at the failures everyone has experienced — cracking, splitting, peeling. A single piece of real hide has no layers to separate, which is why that warranty is a safe bet for the company rather than a gamble. What arrives is stiff, heavy and slightly unwieldy, and then does what good leather does everywhere: softens to your body, takes on character, and improves with use instead of counting down to a crack.

Break-in is short but real, and the correct response is simply to wear it. The strap resists the buckle at first and holds its curve; flexing is the conditioning, and daily use turns stiffness into shape faster than any treatment would. There's no technique to learn — just patience measured in wearings. By the time it's shaped to you, it has also stopped being a generic object; the wear pattern is yours, which is the quiet appeal of full-grain anything.

The physical limits deserve respect rather than complaint. Thickness of this order is right for jeans, work trousers and anything that hangs weight off a belt; it's wrong for a formal suit, where a slim dress belt is the correct object and this would read like a tool at a dinner party. That's a category boundary, not a flaw — the same logic that makes work boots and dress shoes different purchases. Owning one good version of each ends the belt question permanently.

Care is minimal and worth the minutes: an occasional wipe, a rare conditioning, and full-grain leather stays supple for the long haul. Unlike coated bonded straps, there's no surface to peel away when you treat it, and the ageing runs in the right direction — scuffs blend into patina instead of exposing a fibreboard core. Neglect won't kill it quickly either; this is leather that forgives, which cannot be said of anything built from coated laminate.

On price, the framing does the work. Yes, it costs several times what a department-store bonded belt does — and that's the comparison it's supposed to lose. The comparison it wins is against the parade of replacement belts the bonded one becomes, plus the recurring annoyance of the crack, the peel and the repurchase. Buy once, wear daily, and give this category exactly one more thought in your lifetime. That's the entire product, and few categories offer the trade this cleanly — fewer still at a price this reasonable, which is exactly why it earns its rating here.
