Washing machines destroy more clothing than wear ever will. This site spends a lot of words on construction quality, and the uncomfortable corollary deserves equal billing: buying better garments and laundering them badly is spending money to no purpose, because most clothes die in the machine, not on the body. The good news is that the fix costs nothing and asks for no products — just four changes to habit, each removing a source of damage the machine was quietly inflicting all along.

The first change is doing less, and it's free. Most clothing is washed far more often than hygiene requires — habit runs the machine, not need. Denim, merino and outer layers in particular are designed to be aired between wears rather than laundered after each one, and hanging a garment overnight handles most of what a wash cycle is being asked to do. Every cycle is mechanical abrasion and dye loss, so fewer cycles is straightforwardly more garment life, with no technique required at all.

The second is heat, the single most destructive variable you control. Hot water and hot tumble drying shrink fibres, fade dyes and break down stretch — and elastane specifically degrades with heat in a way that never recovers, which is why stretch garments go baggy and stay baggy. Cold washing cleans modern clothing perfectly well with modern detergent, and low or no heat in drying protects everything the wash spared. If a load genuinely needs heat, it's the exception; the default settings most machines ship with are hotter than most laundry ever requires.

The third is the tumble dryer itself, and there's a visual aid built in: the lint filter. That grey felt you clean out after every load is your clothing, mechanically stripped fibre by fibre and collected for inspection. Air drying is the single largest longevity upgrade available in a laundry routine, and wherever space allows a rack or a line, it's worth the mild inconvenience every time. Sunlight even handles the freshening that a wash cycle was being wasted on.

The fourth is separation and load size. Zips, hooks and hardware abrade every soft thing they tumble against, so fasten them before washing and give delicates a mesh bag. Overstuffed drums don't clean properly and grind garments against each other — running fuller loads less often beats cramming, and both beat half-empty cycles run on autopilot. Sorting by fabric weight helps too, because heavy towels tumbling against fine knits is a fight the knits always lose.

None of this costs anything, which is the point worth ending on. The same wardrobe, washed with these habits, lasts years longer than it would on hot-and-tumble autopilot — a difference that dwarfs any saving available from buying cheaper clothes in the first place. Care is the multiplier on every purchase this site recommends; it's the rare free lunch in the whole subject of owning clothes. It also compounds: every garment bought from now on inherits the same extended lifespan, at the same zero cost.
