One division problem fixes most wardrobe spending: take the price, divide by the number of times you will realistically wear the thing, and look at the result before buying. That's the entire method. It requires no app, no budget spreadsheet and no taste — and it quietly reorders almost every clothing decision people agonise over. The difficulty was never the maths; it's that nobody does the maths at the moment of temptation, which is precisely when it earns its keep. Run it in the fitting room, not in the postmortem.
It explains the cases that feel wrong. Resoleable boots at a serious price, worn a couple of times a week for years and renewed by a cobbler along the way, work out to pennies per wear — they're among the cheapest things a wardrobe can contain. A statement dress at a third of the boots' price, worn a handful of times before it dates, is one of the most expensive. The sticker price and the true cost aren't just different; they're frequently ranked in opposite order. Once you've seen that inversion a few times, expensive stops meaning what the price tag says and starts meaning what the wardrobe records.
It also exposes the sale rack for what it is. A discounted item you wouldn't have bought at full price typically gets worn a few times, which means the discount didn't make it cheap — it made a bad purchase slightly less bad. The number that matters was never the percentage off; it was always the denominator, and the denominator on impulse sale buys is brutally small.
Two limitations, held openly. The method requires truthfulness about wear frequency, and people are systematically optimistic about occasion clothing — the imagined future of dinners and events rarely arrives on schedule. And it ignores enjoyment, which is real value: a piece you love wearing earns something the arithmetic can't see. Both are manageable, as long as you know when you're overriding the maths and call it what it is. A wardrobe that's all arithmetic would be a joyless place; the goal is knowing which purchases are investments and which are treats, and never confusing the two.
Applied across a wardrobe, the method pushes spending toward footwear, outerwear and daily basics — the high-denominator categories — and away from occasion pieces. It rewards boring purchases and punishes exciting ones, which is uncomfortable and correct. It's also why the most-worn items in most wardrobes turn out to be the ones bought with the least drama. The favourite jumper, the default jeans, the boots by the door — none of them were exciting purchases, and all of them won.
The habit worth building is running the division before checkout, every single time. Price, divided by honest wears. It takes a moment, costs nothing, and steadily redirects money from the purchases that photograph well to the purchases that get worn — which is, in the end, the entire difference between a wardrobe that works and an expensive closet of receipts.
